Dr. Mark Iain Pilkington is a composer and performer of electroacoustic music. His practice encapsulates sound and image to extend spatial imaginings between real and virtual space. The coupling of sound and image are applied to electroacoustic composition, installation and screen-based works.
Mark has 10 years teaching experience as a piano tutor in private and state education in Greater Manchester. He teaches all ages and abilities, and sees the piano as a way to assist in cognitive development and promote self-confidence. Learn to read and play piano music from a wide range of sources from classical, jazz and contemporary repertoire. He also teaches music theory. Provides techniques for ear training and transcribing of popular music arrangements. He runs an early year’s keyboard ensemble called ‘Happy Hands’ for children between 8-10 years of age. He plays piano and keyboards in various local bands. For instance, The Jazz Harmonists and a David Bowie tribute band. He sees the piano as the perfect instrument to run alongside academic studies to bring pleasure to player and listener.
His compositional work has been performed and screened at ICMC, ARS Electronica, Royal Academy of Arts, The Royal Society, ZKM | Karlsruhe, MANTIS festival and the Open Circuit Festival. Commissioned by Google, Future Everything and the Arts Council England. Awarded the prestigious Giga-Hertz Production Prize for Electronic Music in 2020.
