Guitar
Acoustic guitar. Electric guitar. Classical guitar. Guitars have been around for centuries but have been most popular for about the last 100 years. There are so many styles and genres and many amazing musicians and composers. Getting started can be fairly easy and before long you’ll be able to play a few basic pieces. How far you progress as a guitarist depends on how much time you can devote to playing. Instruments are not overly expensive and they’re very portable!
Drums
To learn drums you’ve got to read music! I use a few really good books which cover a lot of styles and techniques with hundreds of examples of beats and fills. The Rockschool drum syllabus is excellent, especially ‘Hot Rock’. Trinity now have a fine syllabus with many classic songs. Rockschool’s 2018 GBD syllabus looks very promising. Playing along to a backing track is as close as you can get to playing with a band. Drum notation is actually pretty simple and there is a wealth of published material available.
Bass Guitar
As with drums and guitar, bass lessons will involve playing along with music to help learn about rhythm and music theory. TAB is used widely to cover classic bass-lines. There are no chords on bass (well not exactly…) so you’ll be playing arpeggios and then scales to help navigate that enormous fretboard! Rockschool Bass Grades 1 to 8 are within our abilities and pass rates have been 100% to date.
